Dear All,
Please join the seminar by Mr. Andrew To from CIMS - Autonomous Robots Group. Andrew is a current PhD student in the group. A light lunch will be provided.
Title: Surface Inspection in Mobile Field Robotic using RGB-D data
Abstract: The advancement in sensing technology, computing and artificial intelligence, has lead to robots expanding beyond the factory setting and into field environments to assist human workers in undertaking hazardous tasks. For a mobile robot operating autonomously in the field, the ability to build up an environment-awareness of its surrounds is fundamental. Generally, the types of environment-awareness of importance to a mobile robot includes; a geometric map for navigation and path planning, and semantic labelling of objects and surfaces for interaction. My research work focuses on surface-type identification and condition assessment in a three-dimensional (3D) environment by a mobile field robot. The talk will present motivation, challenges and outcomes in the case study of a grit-blasting robot for bridge maintenance.
